Plastic-Free MKE volunteers help shape our initiatives and are the boots on the ground! Our volunteers attend community events all around Milwaukee to share our mission of reducing unnecessary plastics in our surrounding communities and keeping everyone safe from its harms. Even on the hottest of days, you can find our volunteers tabling, running refill stations, and even recruiting new Lake Friendly Businesses. As we respond to new community needs, new volunteer opportunities arise!
Learn more about our Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteering with us serves as a great resume builder, provides additional experience in outreach and education, and connects you to a community of environmental volunteers and activists.
Tabling Volunteer:
Plastic-Free MKE tables at many community events all around Milwaukee to raise public awareness about plastic issues, promote individual and community action, and reach new audiences! Spreading awareness is key in helping our community make educated, autonomous choices.
Refill Station Volunteer:
Plastic pollutes at every stage of its life cycle and disproportionately harms BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities. By providing a more sustainable and socially conscious alternative to single-use water bottles, we are taking a stand against big business interests to exploit natural resources and communities of color. In partnership with organizers, we identify event-specific needs, set up the refill station, and hand out reusable bottles to those who need them. Learn more about the H2O Refill Station Program!
Lake Friendly Business Recruiter:
The Lake Friendly Business Program focuses on verifying and promoting restaurants, bars, and cafes that have taken steps to reduce their single-use plastics. Our role is to help support and acknowledge businesses that are already doing great, but to also encourage and guide local favorites that may be far from Lake Friendly to reduce their single-use plastic waste, as well! Core Team Member:
The Core Team is a small group of leading volunteers that attend monthly meetings to guide Plastic-Free MKE’s ongoing strategy and public mission. Core team members provide insight, direction, and feedback, as well as support public webinars and other key programs. They also assist with presenting to community groups, tabling activities, and the H2O refill program when their capacity allows.
Social Media Volunteer:
This can be an opportunity to help amplify the message of a cause you care about! Social media volunteers have experience in Facebook and Instagram communications, as well as some background in graphic design and communications. Our Communications Team collaboratively works to create and curate content for our Facebook page and Instagram account - all with the purpose of increasing engagement and awareness surrounding plastic’s overall impact. Hour commitment: 10 hours / month
