Join the Plastic-Free MKE movement on November 19th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Urban Ecology Center Riverside Brach (1500 E. Park Pl.) for our seasonal public meeting. These meetings give everyone the opportunity to meet others in the coalition, share our plastic-free thoughts, and learn more about what's happening in our movement. There will be good snacks, sparkling water, and fun activities the whole evening. So bring along friends, family, neighbors, kids, and anyone else who is interested in hearing more about Plastic-Free MKE!

Action: Tell the EPA to Protect Our Waterways from Toxic Plastic Chemicals
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed to designate several chemicals, including polyvinyl chloride, as "High Priority Substances." We want to make sure that they urgently evaluate these chemicals which are directly linked to single-use plastics. Attend: Plastic-Free President: The Future of U.S. Policy on Plastics
Join us in attending the Plastic Pollution Coalition's webinar on October 23rd at 4 p.m. where they will discuss the role our next U.S. President needs to play in eliminating plastic pollution and focusing on communities that are disproportionally harmed by it. Policy experts and activists alike will lay out their recommendations and priorities for our next U.S. administration.

Action: Take Action on Groundwater Standards
Over 120 communities across the state are at risk due to PFAS, which is a class of highly-toxic, human-made chemicals tied to many health risks. In our watershed, PFAS have been detected in the drinking water supply, and the Wisconsin legislature is still blocking groundwater standards for over 46 chemicals, including 18 PFAS chemicals that need updated regulations. Join us and our partner Wisconsin Conservation Voters in telling our Wisconsin legislators enough is enough.

Fashion’s Plastic Paralysis: How Brands Resist Change and Fuel Microplastic Pollution
"Synthetic fibers derived from fossil fuels and have become the dominant choice for both the fashion and wider textile industries. They account for over two-thirds (69%) of textile production, a figure projected to rise to 73% by 2030. Our 2021 investigation into more than 4,000 clothing items by global fashion brands revealed that 67% contained synthetic materials."

EPA will withdraw approval of Chevron plastic-based fuels likely to cause cancer
"In a recent court filing, the federal agency said it “has substantial concerns” that the approval order “may have been made in error”. The EPA gave a Chevron refinery in Mississippi the green light to make the chemicals in 2022 under a “climate-friendly” initiative intended to boost alternatives to petroleum, as ProPublica and the Guardian reported last year."
