Halloween will look a little bit different this year, but there are still ways to make your holiday celebrations more sustainable. Here are four things to try this year!
1) Buy candy in bulk. Trick-or-treating might be out of the question this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge and enjoy candy. Plastic-Free MKE coalition member Glass Pantry has bulk candy options so you can enjoy treats without the plastic waste.
2) Compost your pumpkins. Over a billion pounds of pumpkins are grown every year, much of which ends up decomposing in landfills emitting methane. In Milwaukee, try dropping off your fall porch decor at a shared compost site!
3) Roast your pumpkin seeds. Before you compost your pumpkin, be sure to roast the seeds to get more out of it. Pro Tip: You can roast most winter squash seeds! Here’s a great recipe to try!
4) If you need a costume this year, try rewearing or upcycling an old one. Costumes are often only worn once and end up in landfills.
